TONIGHT!

Tipping the Scoville Scale, originally uploaded by exoskeletoncabaret.

Tipping the Scoville Scale

The habanero pepper is one of the most painfully spicy species of chili peppers. Its extreme heat makes it ideal for cooking that bites back. In Mexico, habaneros are inserted into tequila or mezcal bottles for a number of weeks, resulting in an intensely masochistic alcoholic buzz.

[Thanks to Chris and Lindsey for chucking peppers repeatedly across the frame!]

The Choke of Man, originally uploaded by exoskeletoncabaret.

The Choke of Man

My sincerest apologies to René Magritte. We put the “art” back into “artichoke”.

About his own painting, he wrote:

“At least it hides the face partly. Well, so you have the apparent face, the [artichoke], hiding the visible but hidden, the face of the person. It’s something that happens constantly. Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.”

Artichoke from Chris’ kitchen. It returned there post-shoot, where we ate it.

[I am especially pleased at how spot-on we got the framing of this parody. One can see the edge of the left eye in the original painting, too.]

Teabagging, originally uploaded by exoskeletoncabaret.

Teabagging

Teabagging is an “erotic” BDSM activity that suggests male dominance and resembles the top dunking a bag of tea into a cup.

On that note, we’re inclined to believe that earl grey (hot) is the dominant form of teabagging, despite the gender of the person consuming. Jean Luc Picard would agree.

Wheatgrass supposedly possesses unique curative properties…such as mending constipation and easing menopause.

We just like it because it’s fluffy.

This upcoming art walk will be a sweet treat! Starfish Studios will present a collection of luscious food- and beverage-themed images shot by our five photographers.  Edibles will be served.

Come hungry. Heh.

My contribution to the show is a rather epic collection of sexy people posing with “unsexy” foods, i.e. not what you’d immediately think of as aphrodisiacs. I think a lot of the photos are pretty darn funny because of this, and there’s nothing sexier than a hearty laugh. Except for healthy food and girls in lingerie (worksafe).

I’ve got a teaser set posted to Flickr, if anyone wants to take a bite. ;) Some of the photos in the set are not safe for work (they contain respectful nudity), and you’ll need to log into Flickr to see those. I will be editing and sharing more images between now and the time of the show, though I hope to see you there in person. I probably will have very few prints of the set for sale at first, but I intend to produce a lovely set of fridge magnets for purchase. Magnets go nicely with the foodie theme. :)

Thanks!

Pioneer Square Art Walk
Thursday, April 2, 2009 6-10 pm
619 Western Avenue, 4th Floor South
Seattle, Washington

This month, the photography studio of which I am a part will present a multimedia collection of work by thirteen of our Seattle-based artist friends (as well as ourselves). This is your chance to view a huge variety of artwork in one studio! We hung a majority of the work yesterday afternoon (also consumed a number of adult beverages and several types of cheese) and the show is looking stellar, if I do say so myself. We’ve got an array of paintings, photos, some breathtaking 3-D objects, and more!

This show is ONE NIGHT ONLY. Hope to see you on Thursday!

Petra was in town this weekend, visiting from Portland. It seems any time one of my friends comes around for a weekend I send them to my studio to tart up and make them pose for my camera. I am fortunately very blessed to have such an attractive and photogenic social circle. We blew through five hours in the studio yesterday, and then Lindsey, Petra, and I headed to the International District (with Qais in tow) for a much-deserved bubble tea.

This image was shot using a Lensbaby Composer and two 300 watt monolights. Master light (camera right) used a reflector and shoot-through umbrella, slave light (camera left) used a softbox.

I am also particularly fond of this shot, of Petra’s poetic upper back tattoo.

The rest of what I’ve managed to crank out of the editing software is/will be here. I am in the midst of ordering the remainder of the prints for my solo show, which I install next Sunday. Hopefully, after then, I can calm down and stop thinking in pixels, Pantone colors, and Photoshop docs for a while.

Thanks.

Studio Shoot with Lindsey Watkins

Lindsey is normally off-camera, doing hair and makeup of epic proportions for professional models. This week, I decided a little role reversal was in order and put her in front of my lens.  Lindsey’s white-blonde locks look stunning sleek or teased, and she was totally patient with me as I played with my new Lensbaby. We had fun rifling through my closet and she modeled a few of my favorite corsets.

Check out the set here. I’ll be adding more images of Lindsey over the next week, and printing a number of these for my upcoming show. Thanks.

Studio Shoot with Molly Mitchell

~~~~~~
Here’s one of the images I took of Molly on Sunday, at my first studio shoot at Starfish. It was also my first time using my new lighting kit–a pair of 300 watt monolights with a softbox and a shoot-through umbrella. I’m really pleased with the color and shadow, and despite some drama regarding a PC adapter for my camera’s hotshoe, the strobes were pretty simple to handle.
More images to come as I edit them this week!
Seattle Art Walk 2.5.09
Monday, February 2nd, 2009
This Thursday will be my first Pioneer Square art walk! I joined Starfish Studios recently, and the five of us photog-types will be presenting some of our work to the public. The Pioneer Square art walk is the largest in the city of Seattle, and I look forward to a big crowd.
The event is free, and I will provide hot tea and edible treats. Please come out and support us! [flier by Angel Ceballos]
And…whilst you’re in the area, please check out my dear friend Danny’s solo gig at Utilkilts’ flagship store–it’s just one street over:
I stopped by his installation yesterday, and his decadent arrangement of brilliantly jewel-toned images is to die for. [flier by Danny]
Hope to see you out Thursday! Drop by either show and say hello.
