The Ghosts Project (+ Libby) Return to the Hoosierlands

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

As it is May once again, a-travelin’ I will go.

First stop this month is my hometown of Bloomington, Indiana. My good friends of Dark Side Tribal have invited my other good friends The Ghosts Project and Nathaniel Johnstone back for yet another wild night of raucous improv action and bootyshakinz. I’m coming along for the ride because it would be sacrilege to miss this, and it’s like a big ol’ fambly reunion.

This past weekend, I visited San Francisco with Nathaniel Johnstone for a whirlwind tour; a brief meet-up with my Frisco family, Molly and Jason; and a private performance.

On violin, mandolin, and guitar, Nathan accompanied my friends Jill Tracy and Paul Mercer (with members of the Malcontent Orchestra) at Bimbo’s 365, an antique supper club-turned rock venue. Jill’s performance was the featured entertainment for the Linden Lab/Second Life steampunk-themed holiday party, which I totally snuck into. It pays to have friends in low places and a very nice camera.

Even though the stage lighting was somewhat poor, I managed to get a number of decent photographs. Thank you, monopod and $85 lens. Check out the set here. There’s an especially nice shot of Paul and a portrait of Nathan, and some pics of the band.

Pulling Your Insides Out

Pulling Your Insides Out, originally uploaded by exoskeletoncabaret.

Here’s a set of photos from the performance with Jill Tracy, The Ghosts Project, Nathaniel Johnstone, Magpie Killjoy, Schrödinger’s Cat, and DJ Q that Willow and I arranged last weekend.

Gigs like that one remind me why I organize and promote events. By no means was it flawless, but everyone involved passionately pulled their weight and many moments of beautiful, organic, aural art emerged as a result.  The space was transformed from an erotic theatre to a simply sensual node of creation.  Before this, I don’t think I’d witnessed such a wide range of emotion from performers during a single set–during one improvised piece, Paul and I were weeping in tandem, I in the audience with my camera and he onstage with his antique viola, and by the next song, I was cackling like a hyena with unfettered glee. I have unspeakably talented friends all across the country, and watching them improvise and work together so fluidly gives me great hope.

Willow’s review, Magpie’s review, and Jean-Paul’s review sum up the specific details quite nicely.  Thanks to everyone who attended or participated!
