Super Bowl? What Super Bowl?! You aren’t busy with television, really. Get ready to weep for joy and get your butt to Club Motor, ’cause ExoCab and crew will be appearing tomorrow (Sunday, February 7) at Seattle’s Mourning Market, which is a FREE craft fair for all things dark, gloomy, spooky, and otherwise ooky. We’ll be there from 12-5 pm, at 1950 1st Avenue South (98134).

Besides all the fantastically shiny gothy stuffs, yours truly will have beetle elytra earrings, vacuum tube jewelry, photo prints, and pretty things to attach to your noggin. Joining me will be Noah Beasley of Improbable Cog, purveying metal and nylon jewelry made with love by robots.

I’m also pleased to announce that we’ll be vending the first wave of clothing from our upcycled fashion line, Gypsy Mansion.  Noah, Finn von Claret, Bergen McMurray, our gang, and I have been hard at work, sweatshoppin’ to bring you one-of-a-kind, hand-sewn, uniquely dyed and embellished clothes in a variety of sizes.

So, come on out and buy something handmade for you or your sweetheart, and do swing by our booth and say hello!

I believe I’ve shot about 10,000 images since May, and have been bustin’ out art shows like it’s goin’ out of style. I currently have photography up in four different places in Seattle. They are as follows:

Kaladi Bros. – 511 E Pike Street, in Capitol Hill (solo show; Food Pornography Redux)

The LASTWEAR Store – 5459 Leary Avenue N.W in Ballard (older work, mostly studio and steampunk-themed)

All of the work at these locations is priced reasonably to move. I really do not need four shows’ worth of framed prints in my house! Go buy stuff, please! <3

After a lengthy struggle and much holding of heads, we are delighted to finally be able to announce the release of Issue #6 of Steampunk Magazine – The Pre-Industrial Revolution. With the final part of John Reppion’s ‘Doppler and the Madness Engine’; a look at the Romantics and what they did for us; alchemy; Luddites; corsets; sculpture; windmills; poetry; and Victorian martial arts, it’s our biggest issue to date.

Had a stupendously great shoot yesterday with Fiona Minx, Can-Can performer and lifelong dancer. In the past, I have rarely shot people who aren’t close, personal friends, but it was a pleasure to meet and shoot someone totally new. That ridiculous orange backdrop is to die for! Check out a smattering of the images we made here, including dangerous ladder stunts and fun times with sparkle hood action!

So, in other news…let’s be honest. I don’t often make highly personal public blog posts, but for those of you who don’t know: I lost my dayjob about 10 days ago, before I left for Maker Faire. Economy fail.

Thus, I’m looking for work again, be it full-time, part-time, or a one-off. I’ll gladly shoot studio-quality senior portraits,  engagement photos, artist/performer portfolios/headshots, family photos, costumes, your artwork, or your vanity. Yes, I can make you look that good *points up*. My rates are affordable, negotiable based on project, and I sure like to eat, so if you need photos/design/my brains, I’m your man. I will be representing Steampunk Magazine at this weekend’s MAKE Magazine Maker Faire (San Mateo, California), which is the largest DIY festival worldwide. I think there were approximately 65,000 people there last year.

We will be one aspect of Carnivale Mechanique, which is an enlarged version of last year’s Steampunk Contraptor’s Lounge. We won an award at the 2008 faire for this area, and received attention in an issue of MAKE Magazine earlier this year. I covered a bit of the Maker Faire experience as part of my interview with the Chronabelle folks in Issue #5.

SPM will be joined by many of our extended family members: Jake von Slatt, Datamancer, Deshret Dance Company, Suzanne Forbes, David S. Dowling, members of the Etsy Steam Team, and more.

I will have print copies of Steampunk Magazine Issue #5 available for barter or purchase.

If you will be in attendance, please come say hi, brainstorm, dance with Nathaniel Johnstone’s band of wayward musicians, have a snack with us, etc.

Tipping the Scoville Scale

The habanero pepper is one of the most painfully spicy species of chili peppers. Its extreme heat makes it ideal for cooking that bites back. In Mexico, habaneros are inserted into tequila or mezcal bottles for a number of weeks, resulting in an intensely masochistic alcoholic buzz.

The Choke of Man

My sincerest apologies to René Magritte. We put the “art” back into “artichoke”.

About his own painting, he wrote:

“At least it hides the face partly. Well, so you have the apparent face, the [artichoke], hiding the visible but hidden, the face of the person. It’s something that happens constantly. Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.”

Teabagging is an “erotic” BDSM activity that suggests male dominance and resembles the top dunking a bag of tea into a cup.

On that note, we’re inclined to believe that earl grey (hot) is the dominant form of teabagging, despite the gender of the person consuming. Jean Luc Picard would agree.
