Artist Reception: Saturday, August 22, 8-11 p.m.

See, a Saturday reception for folks who can’t usually make it out during the week for Art Walk! yay! The pool table will be out, and I’ll have Katamari Damacy on the big screen (in case the art isn’t entertaining enough as it is ;) .

Put this on your calendar! I’ll post again when it gets closer to the event, too.

2009 Maker Faire Photos

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Molly and Robin, originally uploaded by exoskeletoncabaret.

Here’s a great shot of Molly and Robin, two of our talented bellydancers, at Carnivale Mechanique, the steampunk area of Maker Faire.

It has taken me the better part of this week to edit and upload just a small portion of the images I shot at Maker Faire last weekend (I took about 1,235 pictures in two days!). I wager I’ll spend at least another few days putting up the best of the set but you can take a sneaky peak at my Flickr album now.

I had so much unabashed fun and delight running around with my dear friends from all across the country and causing a ruckus that I can still hardly contain myself. As Qais so deftly put–Maker Faire is the new Christmas. Hell, it’s better than Christmas, because everyone there is smiling and creative and outgoing, and nearly everything is on fire, it seems.

Check back often! I’ll be posting random shots here at the blog, too.
Thank you.

I’ve been so swamped since returning from Maker Faire that I nearly forgot to mention this!

So…Drinkies for grown-ups and lots of new photography! See you at 6:30.

Carnivale Mechanique at Maker Faire

Thursday, May 28th, 2009
Once again, it’s Maker Faire time!

Carnivale Mechanique, originally uploaded by exoskeletoncabaret.

I will be representing Steampunk Magazine at this weekend’s MAKE Magazine Maker Faire (San Mateo, California), which is the largest DIY festival worldwide. I think there were approximately 65,000 people there last year.

We will be one aspect of Carnivale Mechanique, which is an enlarged version of last year’s Steampunk Contraptor’s Lounge. We won an award at the 2008 faire for this area, and received attention in an issue of MAKE Magazine earlier this year. I covered a bit of the Maker Faire experience as part of my interview with the Chronabelle folks in Issue #5.

SPM will be joined by many of our extended family members: Jake von Slatt, Datamancer, Deshret Dance Company, Suzanne Forbes, David S. Dowling, members of the Etsy Steam Team, and more.

I will have print copies of Steampunk Magazine Issue #5 available for barter or purchase.

If you will be in attendance, please come say hi, brainstorm, dance with Nathaniel Johnstone’s band of wayward musicians, have a snack with us, etc.

The Ghosts Project (+ Libby) Return to the Hoosierlands

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

As it is May once again, a-travelin’ I will go.

First stop this month is my hometown of Bloomington, Indiana. My good friends of Dark Side Tribal have invited my other good friends The Ghosts Project and Nathaniel Johnstone back for yet another wild night of raucous improv action and bootyshakinz. I’m coming along for the ride because it would be sacrilege to miss this, and it’s like a big ol’ fambly reunion.

TONIGHT!

Tipping the Scoville Scale, originally uploaded by exoskeletoncabaret.

Tipping the Scoville Scale

The habanero pepper is one of the most painfully spicy species of chili peppers. Its extreme heat makes it ideal for cooking that bites back. In Mexico, habaneros are inserted into tequila or mezcal bottles for a number of weeks, resulting in an intensely masochistic alcoholic buzz.

The Choke of Man, originally uploaded by exoskeletoncabaret.

The Choke of Man

My sincerest apologies to René Magritte. We put the “art” back into “artichoke”.

About his own painting, he wrote:

“At least it hides the face partly. Well, so you have the apparent face, the [artichoke], hiding the visible but hidden, the face of the person. It’s something that happens constantly. Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.”

Artichoke from Chris’ kitchen. It returned there post-shoot, where we ate it.

[I am especially pleased at how spot-on we got the framing of this parody. One can see the edge of the left eye in the original painting, too.]

Teabagging, originally uploaded by exoskeletoncabaret.

Teabagging

Teabagging is an “erotic” BDSM activity that suggests male dominance and resembles the top dunking a bag of tea into a cup.

On that note, we’re inclined to believe that earl grey (hot) is the dominant form of teabagging, despite the gender of the person consuming. Jean Luc Picard would agree.

Wheatgrass supposedly possesses unique curative properties…such as mending constipation and easing menopause.

We just like it because it’s fluffy.
